Foldables combine a compact format with a large display. Find Flip and Fold models new and used – and learn what matters with the hinge and display.

Flip or Fold?

Foldable smartphones come in two designs. The Flip format is reminiscent of old flip phones: unfolded, it is a normal smartphone; folded, it fits into any small pocket, and an outer display shows the time, notifications and sometimes entire apps. The Fold format is a slightly narrower smartphone when closed and a small tablet when opened – ideal for documents, two apps side by side or videos.

  • Flip: compact, stylish, cheaper – camera and battery usually weaker
  • Fold: large inner display for productivity, excellent cameras, much more expensive

Durability: hinge, crease and protection

The foldable inner display is protected by a plastic layer instead of normal glass and is therefore more sensitive to pressure and sharp objects. Depending on the model and the light, a crease in the middle may be visible or noticeable to the touch. Manufacturers test their hinges for a very large number of folds, but you should still keep sand and dirt away. Many current models are water-resistant, but usually only partially protected against fine dust – check the IP rating in the spec sheet.

Buying used: check carefully

With foldables especially, it is worth looking at last year’s models and used devices, as they lose value quickly. This page therefore shows new and used offers – the condition is stated with each offer. On used devices, pay particular attention to the factory-fitted screen protector on the inner display (it should not be peeling), the hinge for even resistance, and the display for dead pixels along the crease. A display repair on a foldable is expensive, so buying from a retailer with statutory warranty makes particular sense here.

Everyday practicality

Foldables are thicker and heavier than regular smartphones but are easy to stow when folded. Battery life and charging speed are often slightly below comparable flagship smartphones, as space inside the housing is limited. Also budget for a suitable case that does not obstruct the hinge.

With the Flip format, the outer display plays a big role: the larger it is, the more you can do without unfolding – replying to messages, checking maps or using the main camera for selfies. Check which apps run fully there.
