Compare refurbished smartphones

A refurbished smartphone has been tested by a specialist company, reset to factory settings, cleaned and repaired if necessary. Unlike a simple used purchase from a private seller, all key components are checked for proper function. However, the term is not legally protected – how thoroughly devices are tested depends on the retailer. Reputable providers describe their testing process and offer a guarantee on top of the statutory warranty.

Retailers usually sort devices into grades such as “Excellent”, “Very good” and “Good”. The grade almost always describes only the appearance – scratches on the housing and display – not the function. If you put the phone in a case anyway, the “Good” grade can often save you a noticeable amount.

If you buy from a commercial seller in Germany, you have a statutory warranty (Gewährleistung). For used goods, the seller may shorten it to one year if this is expressly agreed; otherwise two years apply. When buying online, you also have a 14-day right of withdrawal. In private sales, the warranty can be excluded entirely – an important reason to buy refurbished from a retailer. Immediately after delivery, check battery health, cameras, speaker, microphone, Face ID or fingerprint sensor, and charging.

A refurbished smartphone does more than save money: a large part of a smartphone’s environmental impact arises during production. Continuing to use an existing device extends its lifespan and avoids demand for new raw materials. Still, make sure the model gets security updates – otherwise the benefit quickly disappears.

Many refurbishers also state whether the battery or display has been replaced. A new battery is a real plus, as it resets the component that wears out the most. If in doubt, ask before buying which parts were replaced.
