Samsung is the best-selling Android brand in Germany. Compare Galaxy models from every series – from the affordable A range to the Ultra.

The Galaxy series at a glance

Samsung divides its smartphones into clearly separate families. Knowing the differences helps you find the right model faster and avoid paying for features you will never use.

  • Galaxy S: flagships with the fastest chips, excellent cameras and long update commitments. The FE versions are pared-down, cheaper offshoots.
  • Galaxy S Ultra: the top model with a large display, powerful zoom and a built-in S Pen.
  • Galaxy A: entry-level and mid-range phones with big batteries and AMOLED displays – the best-selling series.
  • Galaxy Z: foldable smartphones, either as a Flip (clamshell format) or a Fold (a tablet that opens up).
  • Galaxy XCover: rugged devices with a replaceable battery or outdoor protection for work.

Updates: a major plus

Among Android manufacturers, Samsung offers some of the longest update commitments. For current S models it promises up to seven years of Android and security updates, and many current A models also receive several major Android versions. The exact commitment depends on the model – check it on the manufacturer’s website before buying an older device. Last year’s S model is often a smarter choice than a new entry-level phone, because it will be supported for a long time and offers much more performance.

What to look for when buying

Check the model number: European devices usually end in a “B” (e.g. SM-S921B), US versions in a “U”. Imported devices generally work in Germany but may have different features or support different frequency bands. Many Galaxy A models have a microSD slot, while the S series has lacked one for several generations – so choose generous storage from the start there.

The cameras are where the series differ most: only S models and some Z models have a true telephoto lens. If zoom matters to you, the extra cost is worth it; for daylight snapshots, the mid-range is perfectly adequate.

Last year’s model as a money-saver

Once a new generation launches, retail prices for its predecessors usually drop significantly. The price history on wohandy.de shows how a model’s price has developed and helps you spot genuine lows. With the S series in particular, you get plenty of flagship technology with a long update commitment for the price of a new mid-range phone.
