The A series is Samsung’s volume range: big batteries, solid cameras and AMOLED displays at prices well below the S series. Find the latest deals here.

Understanding the model numbers

In the Galaxy A series, the number tells you a lot about where a model sits: the first digit indicates the class, the second the model year. An A1x model is an entry-level phone, A2x and A3x make up the mid-range, and A5x is the upper mid-range with a better build and a more powerful chip. A higher final digit means a newer model year.

  • A1x: basic model, often with an LCD or simple AMOLED, for calls, messaging and browsing
  • A2x/A3x: well-balanced mid-range, usually AMOLED at 90 to 120 Hz
  • A5x: upper mid-range with a metal frame, better camera and water resistance

Strengths and compromises

Batteries of around 5,000 mAh are typical of the A series and easily last a day with normal use, often two. Many models have a microSD slot, so you can store photos and music cheaply on a card. The cameras take good pictures in daylight, but in low light and when zooming, the more expensive S models have a clear advantage.

The savings show in the processor (less power for demanding games), charging speed and build quality. If you mainly use messaging, social media, navigation and photos, you will hardly notice this in everyday use.

4G or 5G, and which model year?

Some entry-level models come in both a 4G/LTE and a 5G version. 5G is more future-proof, but LTE is still perfectly adequate day to day. The model year matters more: newer A models get much longer update commitments than older ones. A current mid-range model is therefore often a better investment than an older device with nominally better specs. Also check whether a charger is included – with current Samsung models, it usually is not.

Who the A series is ideal for

The A series suits anyone looking for a reliable everyday smartphone with long battery life who does not need a top camera: as a first smartphone for teenagers, a phone for parents and grandparents, or a work phone. If you want more later, the S FE range is a step up with a better chip and camera. For children and teenagers, a sturdy case is also worthwhile, as the backs of the cheaper models are usually plastic and scratch more easily.
